I would like to extend a special thanks to my
long time friend and mentor Sensei Gavin
Armstrong.  He is an inspiring and brilliant
teacher.  Without him I would never have had
the courage to pursue this dream.  He is the
epitome of what Sensei Kimura was struggling
to develop in a Karateka.  I have been training
with Sensei Gavin since the late 1970's.
Having seen  him transcend every obstacle in
life and create one of our styles most
successful schools I am deeply grateful,
humbled and indebted to the gifts he has given
me.  Thank you Sensei Gavin.  May your good
luck bless our new Dojo!  Oss!
I also extend a warm and heartfelt thanks to the entire USA
Team, Coaches, Sensei's and Shihans.  You've made the
journey a beautiful one!

Congratulations to all who took home Gold, Silver and Bronze
in Jarvenpaa Finland World Tournement June 2006.  Go
Team USA!

Why Study Martial Arts?

Humans need community.  They also benefit greatly from exercise
both of the mind and body.  Forming connections with other people,
culture and your self is a gift that keeps on giving.  As you focus
internally both in mind and body your spirit awakens.  In Budo we
call this the Chi.  This is the vital energy of life.  It can be sculpted
like fine marble if the passion is great enough.  You are your own
temple and your mind and body are its garden.  I invite you to
explore and connect with the many cultures that comprise
Shukokai, the wonders of learning an ancient samurai art and most
importantly, to learn a little more about yourself.  You are more
powerful than you have ever dreamed.  It takes respect, effort,
patience, creativity and temperance to reach the ultimate goal of
awakening the power within.  This was Sensei Kimura's dream.
Please join us at Glen Ridge Shukokai Karate as we carry on the
traditions of many Samurai who have devoted their lives to the
finest art.
